Mafate

Situation : west - center

Surface : a little more than 100 km ². It is the 2nd biggest cirque of Reunion in term of surface after Cilaos.

The summits :

  • Gros Morne : 2990 m - it is the second highlight of the island
  • Ramparts of the Roche Ecrite : 2280 m, it is the junction point between the cirque of Mafate and the cirque of Salazie
  • Col du Taibit : 2080 m, Taibit is the junction point between the cirque of Mafate and the cirque of Cilaos

Opening on the coast : Mafate opens on the west coast by the River "Rivière des Galets"

... But what is a (geographical) "cirque" ?

A cirque is a natural surrounding wall with abrupt walls, of circular or semicircular shape, formed by a depression of glacial origin, it is then a glacial cirque, or volcanic as the cirque of Mafate.

In Reunion, the word "cirque" indicates a caldera (depression of volcanic origin surrounded with mountain).
